"You can't talk about solving the economic problem of the Negro without talking
about billions of dollars. You can't talk about ending the slums without first
saying profit must be taken out of slums. You're really tampering and getting on
dangerous ground because you are messing with folk then. You are messing with
captains of industry.... Now this means that we are treading in difficult water,
because it really means that we are saying that something is wrong... with
capitalism.... There must be a better distribution of wealth and maybe America
must move toward a democratic socialism".

Thursday, June 16th, 2011, 7:00-9:00 PM. Democratic Socialists of Central Ohio Meeting. Open business meeting followed by educational program. Screening of the documentary, Inside Job, by Academy Award ® nominated filmmaker, Charles Ferguson, that takes a closer look at what brought about the financial meltdown and economic crisis of 2008. The global financial meltdown, at a cost of over $20 trillion, resulted in millions of people losing their homes and jobs. Through extensive research and interviews with major financial insiders, politicians and journalists, INSIDE JOB traces the rise of a rogue industry and unveils the corrosive relationships which have corrupted politics, regulation and academia. Narrated by Academy Award® winner Matt Damon, INSIDE JOB was made on location in the United States, Iceland, England, France, Singapore, and China. Director’s statement: "This film attempts to provide a comprehensive portrayal of an extremely important and timely subject: the worst financial crisis since the Depression, which continues to haunt us via Europe’s debt problems and global financial instability. It was a completely avoidable crisis; indeed for 40 years after the reforms following the Great Depression, the United States did not have a single financial crisis. However, the progressive deregulation of the financial sector since the 1980s gave rise to an increasingly criminal industry, whose "innovations" have produced a succession of financial crises. Each crisis has been worse than the last; and yet, due to the industry’s increasing wealth and power, each crisis has seen few people go to prison. In the case of this crisis, nobody has gone to prison, despite fraud that caused trillions of dollars in losses. I hope that the film, in less than two hours, will enable everyone to understand the fundamental nature and causes of this problem. It is also my hope that, whatever political opinions individual viewers may have, that after seeing this film we can all agree on the importance of restoring honesty and stability to our financial system, and of holding accountable those to destroyed it." Corporate Power and Unfair Taxation
"The logical consequence leads us to Senate Bill 5, where the budget is
ostensibly to be balanced by curtailing human rights of workers, by making
them cheaper. This downward pressure and the narrative that supports it comes
from a powerful community, it's backed by the Chambers of Commerce, it's
backed by the corporate 'persons' that have gained in ascendancy..."

Senator Bernie
Sanders, The Huffington Post: "When the Senate reconvenes on November 17th, I
intend to fight for an economic recovery program that is significant enough in
size and scope to respond to the major economic crisis this country now faces.
If we can commit more than $1 trillion to rescue bankers and insurance companies
from their reckless and irresponsible behavior, we certainly should be investing
in millions of good-paying jobs that rebuild our nation and improve its economy.
In my view, the size of this economic recovery plan should be, at a minimum,
$300 billion."
Democratic Left Update
The new issue of Democratic Left is now available online at DSA’s web site. The issue contains two important comments on the election by DSA Honorary Chairs Bogdan Denitch and Frances Fox Piven. You can read or download a copy of the new issue right now by clicking here.

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched,
every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from
those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not
clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone.
It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its
scientists, the hopes of its children."
